If you've been thinking about PrEP but aren't sure where to start — or whether it's even right for you — you're not alone. Many people feel uncertain about the process, worried it might be complicated, expensive, or require awkward conversations with a doctor they don't fully trust. At Spectrum by Equalis Health, we've built our entire care model around removing those barriers.
Here's exactly what you can expect when you reach out to us.
PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis. It's a medication taken before potential HIV exposure to prevent infection. When taken consistently, PrEP is over 99% effective at preventing HIV transmission. It is available as a daily oral pill — most commonly Truvada (tenofovir/emtricitabine) or Descovy (tenofovir alafenamide/emtricitabine) — and is prescribed by a licensed clinician after a brief health assessment.
PrEP is recommended for people who are at higher risk of HIV exposure. This includes gay and bisexual men, trans individuals, people with HIV-positive partners, and anyone whose sexual practices may put them at risk. You don't need to fit a particular profile or justify your lifestyle to access it. If you want protection, that's enough reason.
No. At Spectrum by Equalis Health, you do not need a referral from a family doctor or specialist. You can contact us directly, complete a short intake form online, and be connected with a licensed Nurse Practitioner — all from your home, anywhere in Alberta.
Your first step is completing a short, secure online intake. This takes about 5 to 10 minutes and covers basic health history, current medications, and a few questions about your sexual health. It's designed to be straightforward and judgment-free. Our clinicians have heard it all — there's nothing you could share that would surprise or change the quality of care you receive.
Once your intake is reviewed, you'll be connected with one of our NP-led clinicians for a virtual visit. This is a real conversation — not a chatbot, not a form — with a licensed healthcare provider who specializes in sexual health and LGBTQ+-affirming care. During this visit, your clinician will review your health history, discuss your needs, and determine whether PrEP is appropriate for you.
They'll also walk you through what testing is needed. Standard PrEP requirements include a recent HIV test (to confirm you're HIV-negative before starting), kidney function tests, and STI screening. Your clinician will explain each step clearly and tell you exactly how to get these done — often through a local lab or at-home testing option.
If PrEP is right for you, your clinician will issue a prescription directly. Our pharmacy team works alongside your clinician to ensure your medication is filled quickly and delivered discreetly to your home or available for pickup — whichever you prefer.
Most patients in Alberta pay $0 for PrEP. Coverage through Alberta Health Services, private insurance, or manufacturer patient assistance programs means that the cost of the medication itself is eliminated for the majority of people we see. Your clinician will confirm your coverage during the consultation.
PrEP isn't a one-time prescription. Staying protected means staying connected. We provide structured follow-ups every three months — a brief virtual check-in that includes updated bloodwork, STI screening, and a chance to talk through any questions or changes in your health. This regular monitoring is part of the standard of care for PrEP, and we make it as easy and consistent as possible.
