Why Virtual Care
Walk-in clinics are unpredictable. Family doctors often aren't comfortable with PrEP prescribing. Specialty sexual health clinics in Alberta's major centres have wait times, and if you live outside Calgary or Edmonton, you may be driving hours just to have a 20-minute conversation. The virtual model isn't a compromise — for most people, it's genuinely better.
Your appointment happens wherever you are. Home, your car, a lunch break. As long as you have a few minutes of privacy and a phone signal, you're set.
There is no clinic to be spotted entering. Nothing on your call history that identifies where you've been. Your care stays between you and your clinician.
Rural, remote, or anywhere in the province — the Alberta PrEP guidelines explicitly recognize geographic access as a barrier. We built this clinic to fix that.
Spectrum operates independently. You do not need a referral, an existing relationship with a GP, or anyone else's involvement. You book, you talk to us, we handle it.
Understanding Confidentiality
A lot of clinics use the word without explaining what it means in practice. Here is exactly what confidentiality looks like at Spectrum — in plain language, across every part of your care.
Any correspondence or materials sent to your address identify only our parent organization. There is no mention of Spectrum, sexual health, PrEP, or any indication of what kind of clinic this is. This is deliberate, and it applies to everything we send.
All clinical records at Spectrum are held under the HIA, which governs how health information is collected, used, and disclosed in Alberta. Your information is not shared without your explicit consent, except in very narrow circumstances defined by law.
During your first visit, we confirm whether it's okay to leave a voicemail at the number you provide. If you say no, we don't. Simple as that. We understand not everyone's phone is fully private.
There is no check-in kiosk, no sign-in sheet, no clinic system that logs your visit in a way that could be seen by anyone you haven't authorized. The appointment is a phone call. That's the level of discretion we're working at.
At the start of every visit, we confirm both your legal name and any chosen name you go by. Throughout the appointment, we use the name you've told us you prefer. This matters, and it's built into how every visit runs.
PrEP is appropriate for any HIV-negative person at elevated risk of HIV exposure. That includes, but is not limited to:
People who don't consistently use condoms during sex
Anyone with a partner whose HIV status is unknown or positive
Those with multiple or anonymous sexual partners
People who share needles or injection equipment
Those who have had a syphilis, chlamydia, or gonorrhea diagnosis in the last 12 months
Anyone who has used PEP more than once
People engaged in in-person sex work
Anyone who simply wants to take HIV prevention seriously
Inclusive by Design
Sexual and gender minority communities face documented barriers to healthcare — fear of discrimination, providers without adequate training, or simply environments that don't feel safe. Spectrum was built with those realities in mind.
We ask for and use your chosen name and pronouns at every visit. We use anatomy-neutral language throughout your care. We don't assume, and we don't judge. If we get something wrong, we correct it — and we move on.
Our clinical team is trained in affirming care for trans, non-binary, and two-spirit patients. We understand that gender identity affects anatomy, risk profile, and medication choice — and we handle all of it with competence and care.
Getting Started
Head to spectrum.equalishealth.ca or call 403-800-5400. Choose a time that works for you — no referral, no prior relationship with us needed.
Your clinician will go through your history, walk you through your options, and answer every question you have. You can be anywhere in Alberta for this call.
We send you a requisition. You go to any Alberta lab that suits you. Results come back, we review them, and your prescription goes to your preferred pharmacy.
The Alberta PrEP guidelines specifically recognize that rural and remote Albertans face unique access challenges. Our virtual model was designed to address this. We serve patients province-wide: Red Deer, Lethbridge, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat, Lloydminster, and everywhere in between.
